Size Range: 12.5-22.5 μm wide (LUMCON Guide); 9-18 μm wide (Cupp 1943)
Key Characteristics: Upper valve with deep depression in the center or smoothly concave; lower valve with projecting corners and with long setae, emerging well inside valve margin proceeding outwards almost at right angles to pervalvar axis then curving downwards; many small chloroplasts, found far out into the setae
Confused With: Chaetoceros peruvianus, which has setae of upper valve arising from near center
