Size Range: 1.9-5 μm wide x 40-70 long (LUMCON Guide); 1.5-4.5 μm wide (Thomas 1997, Horner 2002)
Key Characteristics: Cells cylindrical and weakly silicified; form tight straight or sometimes undulate chains by abutting valve faces; two elongate chloroplasts
Confused With: Possibly with Leptocylindrus danicus at first glance, which have numerous small chloroplasts and are more heavily silicified; also with Pseudo-nitzschia spp., which also have two chloroplasts, but which are more pointed or needle-like and form step chains
