Key Characteristics: Cells ladder-like with long horns that end in claw-like spines; valve surface flat or slightly concave; apertures large and rectangular; cells united in straight or curved, often twisted chains; valve areolation usually indistinct
Confused With: Hemiaulus sinensis, which has shorter horns, a slightly convex valve surface, and valve areolation that is very distinct
