Key Characteristics: Cells cylindrical with flat valves that are only slightly rounded at the edges; united in closely set straight chains; spine on valve margin is thin and sharp-looking, fitting into depression on adjacent cell; generally two large chloroplasts
Confused With: Dactyliosolen fragilissimus and Cerataulina pelagica, which are similar in size and shape, but close examination of a terminal cell will reveal a longer, sharper spine, as compared to a small spine in the center of the valve on D. fragilissimus and two marginal horns on C. pelagica
