Key Characteristics: | One chloroplast wrapped valve to valve (sometimes cup-shaped); adjacent cells do not touch, apertures wide; setae originate inside valve margin, are stiff and short, easily broken; occasional pairs of heavier intercalary setae strongly directed toward chain end; one seta of each pair lies near apical axis, the other along the transapical axis (focus up and down to see this) |
Confused With: | Chaetoceros brevis, which also has one chloroplast and wide apertures between cells, but do not have setae in different planes |
