Key Characteristics: Cells ladder-like with relatively short horns that have strong claw-like ends; valves slightly convex; cell wall strongly silicified with distinct areolae; cells united in straight or curved chains
Confused With: Hemiaulus hauckii, which has longer horns, a flat or slightly concave valve surface, and valve areolation that is usually indistinct
