Key Characteristics: Terminal cells usually narrower and longer than the intercalary cells, sometimes much longer; terminal cells also contain fewer gas vacuoles and less pigment, and thus sometimes appear empty; filaments often in large bundles
Confused With: Anabaena species, which can sometimes be found in bundles, but the terminal cells are neither almost devoid of visible contents nor notably narrower than the central ones
